I know something must be done and it is hard not to empathize with them.. but as time goes one maybe they can change a bit at time and life will be alot easier for th animals and the farmers.. one step at a time.. it cannot be a forced one day change.. love the program and the blog thanks b. No sh*t. I must say, I've been meaning to for a long time, even been to vego seminars but never made the full commitment.

Today I made the commitment. And I also ordered Thai vegetarian food tonight for dinner to celebrate, with the utmost support from my parnter - yeeee! It's finally happening!

PS Kris, what are your thoughts on vegetarians who eat fish? Or just eating fish in general?

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

They will have my vote!

xoxo
Bueller

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

Brain, I am so glad you made that point. I was conflicted because of the extremely sympathetic farmer dudes on Oprah. I don't want to see anyone lose their livelihood because the changes forced on them are too abrupt and costly. I think it's important that this legislation provides for the needs of the farmers who will be forced to make these IMPORTANT changes. It made me feel better about it when Lisa Ling (love huh) said at the end of the show that the changes will be gradual and will have to happen by 2012. It helps even more to think of it in a larger context, as you pointed out. We need these changes, and if they can give tax credits to help with the energy crisis, they can certainly help our four legged friends.
Kris, thanks for this lively chat!

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

Hi hubby! I love you. Thanks for posting on my blog. :)

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

Setting aside animal rights for a moment, the economic concerns of the farmers are not abstract. They face real challenges in a marketplace that lives and dies on razor-thin margins. But no industry can expect their business models to remain fixed forever - everything changes. And changes are painful. If organics are putting pressure on conventional farmers, that's just too bad. Sometimes government has to lead where the marketplace is slow to follow. Where would we be without all the clean air laws in the 70's? Government can be helpful in easing those growing pains and encouraging change.

The energy bill passed by the Senate this year gives billions of dollars in tax credits for big solar and wind projects. This isn't like the other tax breaks for consumers to buy hybrids - this is for the industry to change.

There's no reason similar measures can't be adopted to help the conventional farmers adapt and grow.

.... Then there's the rights of the animals... they may not understand the finer points of economic tax policy, but they understand pain....

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

WOW! I am absolutely blown away by Oprah. I want to be just like her when I grow up. I have a girl crush now, even more than I did after meeting her in person on her show. Oprah showed actual cages with cardboard animals in them on the set. I can't believe it! After viewing the shocking size, there was no denying that the individuals living in those jails would never be able to stand up lie down, extend their, legs or wings. Immobilizing someone for their entire life is torture. There are many reasons why we choose to be vegan or veg, there are many reasons why folks choose not to be. However, we can all agree that the animals raised as commodities or units of production deserve a better life before they give their flesh (aka God pod) to a tummy. Those cage free farms were so amazing. The farmers were happy, the animals had happy lives. Yes, the price is higher, but the more you buy those products the more the cost will be driven down. Here's some good news, Prop 2 has a 62 point lead! If it is past there will be a ripple effect. Another interesting little factoid: The Vote Yes for Prop 2 campaign has raised 6.6 million to campaign with from over 17,000 gifts averaging about $134 each. The anti-prop 2 folks (aka the industry) have raised about 6.9 million bucks and from only 172 people averaging over $40,000 each. Need I say more? The industry does not want to change because it doesn't want to bare the cost of creating more space. Creating more space means less animals for them and less animals means less do re mi. They want to scare us by saying that giving animals more space will create health safety issues and danger. WHAT? Stacking animals is what makes them sick! Chickens 5 rows high with 6 to a cage - I can only imagine the smell let alone the sickness. Why else would our farm animals need loads of antibiotics? And did you see those little veal calves with pneumonia, chained, anemic, living in feces? Come on, give me a break. Oh, and I loved this one by the woman on the show who was anti-prop 2 "humans will suffer"...hmmmm...I don't follow that logic sassy, please explain.

This will not wipe out farms, it will make them more responsible and more accountable. It will make our food safer and even give the little farmers more of a chance. Here's my bottom line: It has never been about what farmers won't be able to afford in the future, it's about what they have gotten away with in the past. Say no more California, VOTE prop 2! As Michael Pollan says, it's not about why good food is so expensive it's about why bad food is so cheap (cheap and cruel).

You don't have to be a veggie to be one of my best pals and loves, but we all need to follow the trail that leads to our forks. Vote with your heart even if your stomach grumbles for some bacon. No judgement, just be kind.

Oh, one more thing - I LOVE WAYNE PACELLI!

Peace and PROP 2!
Kris

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

The story the NY Times writer told about the geese will stay with me forever.

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

It was excellent & for those (including myself) who were concerned they wouldn't be able to stomach it, it wasn't too bad to watch. Oprah had people from both sides, & I absolutely loved the clips from the "free range" farms. When the factory farmers said "It can't be done that way" Oprah would show a clip of a farm that did it! I thought it was very well done--& Oprah stated her stance in no uncertain terms. Although, I still don't understand how people (including my friends) still don't know/don't want to know about this. I also posted about this in the forum. Feel free to chime in everyone!

Re: Watch Oprah this Tuesday!

Yes, I posted about that "30 days" when it came on the air in the summer. These attrocities literally crush my soul and smash my heart and I have a hard time recovering sometimes for days afterward. I don't know why I am so sensitive any more. It's just that all the suffering of the fur and feather babies buries me in despair.

Having said that, I know that I MUST BE STRONG and stand strong for what is right. So, I will try very hard to watch. God bless Oprah for taking this on.
