Kris Carr's Crazy Sexy Blog: Puppy tooth fairy?

  • girlandcoconut · 1 year ago
oh yes, these little fur-kids will lose their baby teeth too! you'll be finding em all over your house ;) nothing to worry about my dear!

i started feeding my dogs raw using Ani Phyo's recipe that she used to feed her dog Kanga. Nuts, evoo, veggie scraps, etc and she makes a pate. The recipe is in her book.

I use what i've got on hand but it usually makes enough to get them about 25-50% raw depending on the yield from whatever i had and since i have two poochies to feed it to. I mix that with Avoderm vegetarian kibble and my kids are thriving, their coats are amazing, their poops are smaller (bonus!!) and they are just super wonderful all around!

oh, as for how, slow and steady. take about a week or so to slowly increase more and more to prevent any tummy upsets or scoots. ;)

Awesome idea! Thanks love. PS. I'm still getting used to your new name. I freaked when we thought you left the forum. So sad and then SO happy again. GC - I will keep up the carrots and avoid the bad stuff. I'll eat the chocolate instead. :)
  • girlandcoconut · 1 year ago
ha, i know, i have these online identity crises every few years or so... started out as divaspice ;) who knows, i may be back to lolabloom next year. ;)

miss you mucho, tons of love & hugs to you three!!

p.s. i ADORE those pics of her chewing on her carrots and kale. doggies LOVE carrots usually. most things are good but NO onions, grapes, chocolate - very bad for pooches.
  • Callie · 1 year ago
Hey love.... congrads.. did the tooth fairy bring a carrot ???? I bet there is something under her sweet pillow. Funny I kept all of Saatchi's baby teeth just like my Mom.. But I am on over the top puppy person. I do feed my dog raw. Her raw diet is different from ours.. being a husky she needs tons of fat and making a seven mile a day drag runs the calories off her. If you go to the puppy food store and talk with them they have raw foods in the fridge. Now if your dog needs crude protien maybe not ... every breed is different you have to be careful about the meat and fish.. because the backwash in the water is full full of bateria and those puppy kisses can get you into trouble. But you also have the options of blueberries, sweetpotatoes and carrots on the side and then a food that is holistic.. We use a great brand... and love it and it doesn't put anyone in danger of catching anything then we supplement with carrot coins and brocalli stems.. the only problem is to much raw equals a really upset tummy and rug trouble for you and potty trouble for your little princess. I have to tell you she is so damn adorable.. and beautifullllllll those ears and eyes have my heart.. The brand of food we use is holistic wolf feed it is fabulous. But dont by the can fish unless you really love the smell of sardines.. I know this is not vegan.. but I found for the huskies anyway.. God made them fish hunters and she is not as strong and requires things in her diet I dont. I hope mommy hood is suiting you. It sounds like your gonna have one spoiled rotten baby there but then really is there any other kind.. Kiss her nose for me.. and know that I am sending you tons of tail wiggles from saatchi and tons of hugs from me and ol' duncan. Callie

Mamala! Marmie, Mom, Mum, Mother, Mama n Nem....You are too funny! I have a collection of teeth from over the years also...it just comes natural! Hey, Holistic makes some sprinkle enzymes specifically for transitioning food. They are digestive enzymes! Also, you can find probiotics (Dynamite/Dyna Pro) for dogs and cats too at you local designer pet store. Watching this process is precious....could your family get any cuter??? Hugs! Mary

I know it is all so exciting for our crazy sexy babies! This is a whole venue to be discovered....or uncovered! I see a book or two in the future!! My sis is doing some research for her "mature" Jack Russell with a health challenge and it's like hellewww, why shouldn't they have the best for their little bodies. Oh and kj is in San Diego getting her boards in holostic/alternative medicine, girl!! She said it's all the stuff she already knew (long ago from the old sports days) and is soooo excited! Kris, what you are doing is soo cutting edge and makes total sense....girl, my labs were better than ever this last time. We are doing it!!! Yay! Love you!!! M

Hey cutie, you are such a good mommy!
I just started using Ani Phyo's raw dog food recipe, which is basically a veggie/nut pate with some garlic and salt. I am working on different ones, Malcolm will eat some. not others. he likes almond pulp and almond milk, but not brazil nut milk or pulp. I added brewers yeast too.
    Good Luck with Lucky Lola!

Oh Lola...How is she doing? I hope you've calmed down some. When we got my dog, he was already a year and a half, so he had all his grown up teeth. :) But I HAD heard about dogs loosing their teeth. Best of luck to you and the new baby. :)
  • 100 days in bed · 1 year ago
You're going to be okay. I think since we talk about EVERYTHING here, I can say the first time I saw my pup make #2, I saw how red his "area" was getting and I thought that meant a trip to the hospital!

And you should see how I hovered over him at the dog park, like a human cage! But it's your baby! Now I laugh when I see the newbies at the park who remind me of me and try and reassure them.

Every dog is different but if she is very young, keep an eye on her after eating carrots and kale - I found it made my puppy have to go to the bathroom "RIGHT NOW OR ESLE!" xoxo
  • Dianne_in_DC · 1 year ago
Ah, Kris, I hope this is good practice in mommyhood for you! Didn't you notice those sharp little puppy teeth? I think all milk fed mammals have baby teeth.

When I first wanted to do raw for my kitties you had to make your own. I even had to import bone meal from Canada! Now it is quite an industry. My cats like the raw foods made by Innova; they also do dog food. You can also find them in the freezer at your boutique pet stores. (I think I did see some pup-sicles at the regular grocery store recently.) For cats there is also an "instant" food that is quite good. Please remember dogs are omnivores and need their meat protein. It is essential for their eyes and bone development, so don't even play around with a vegan life style for the pooch.

I tried raw food; but my pugs just did not like it; we switched to rice & chicken, supplemented with lots of veggies and fruit and yogurt and cottage cheese - they are loving it!

good luck - and lots of love
  • Rivendell · 1 year ago
You are too funny...and honey...dogs are natural carnivores.. give her cooked chicken, rice, and carrots...full healthy diet and keep the natural rawhides handy if you wanna keep your shoes! LOL so hard...just be glad you didn't find them with your bare sweet feet! Owie! Anyway, she's going to be a'chewing till she's about a year old so make sure she learns what she's allowed and not allowed to chew. Substitution...that's the key...muahs and giggles...to the new mommie...The best is yet to come!

Ooo, I love a doggie discussion! I have had dogs all my life but I never knew that their teeth fell out! Now that I think about it, I've only adopted dogs that were at least a year old. I would have panicked too! Glad she's just a normal teething baby. Oh. My. God. Those pictures! Could she be any cuter??? Those sweet little eyes looking up at the camera! Killing me.
I cannot feel my dogs even one baby carrot or it is pukesville. Sensitive tummies over here. They are healthy boys but one of them has some dry skin and dandruff! Anyone have a remedy that doesn't involve changing their food?
  • Kris Carr · 1 year ago
Same with her! I'm thinking add some flax oil to her diet? She's loving a mix of Innova canned and raw patties. Kibble? She attacks it like it's possessed! So funny. You are right. Dog talk is quite refreshing 'round here. Love ya!

Sistah Kris & my other friends,
Crazy Sexy Oprah & Martha Stewarts' Holistic minded healing vet, Dr. Marty Goldstein has a great site for a list of how to feed our beloved furries that i thought y'all might like to look at. I used it to help my Boo-Man-Choo who has chronic Addison's, a life threatening dis-ease..anyway, you can also go to Ms. O's site, or his main page by looking up his name, but I locating the food page separately:

    http://www.drmarty.com/feeding.htm

It starts out w/the "best" raw and goes down the list from there...hope its a blessing...xo, Bren
  • Kris Carr · 1 year ago
Honey buns, Love that site! Thank you, thank you. xo
  • Raw Crystal Child · 1 year ago
yeah...the kanga recipes...despite some ignorant commentary, dogs don't need meat to thrive.
But baby cats lose their teeth too...I kept my kittens fangs on the vanity until a friend accidentally blew them down the sink with his breath being too close to the mirror...supposing that is why they call it a vanity...he thoughtfully replaced them years later with a tiger wisker he got from helping out at the zoo.
    Good luck new momma!
  • Kris Carr · 1 year ago
Tiger wisker! How cool! I worked at a zoo when I was a teenager. What an experience.... xo K

My little ladies also love to chew on carrots. They only 'eat' a little bit, but they love to chew! I also have saved my babies' teeth in a plastic bag and pinned them up on the wall.... I got a front tooth and a kanine tooth from each! So sweet...
I'm SO glad you adopted Lola and are having a blast! Dogs are just the best!

My Dixie comes running every time I pull kale out of the refrigerator. She smells it a mile away.
  • Joanna · 1 year ago
ahh i would've been scared too!! i didn't know dogs were supposed to lose their teeth. i've always had cats until a few years ago when we got a dog.

my dog is on a really special diet. we have to get her food at the vet's office every month and she only eats at certain times of the day- 8, 12, 4, and 8. it has to be those times or my stepdad loses it haha
  • Joy · 1 year ago
Hey Kris, check out Ani Phyo's raw food book, she feeds her doggie all raw and has a great section about raw doggies and snacks and the like, blesings on the new baby!

    Love,

  • Vicki Corson · 1 year ago
OH Kris I am so laughing right now. I am sorry!!! It DOES happen to kitties too. I have had several cats over the years and this JUST happened to me the first time with my new furbabies. I saw something hanging out of Bella's mouth and I pulled it out and it was a baby tooth -- I almost died right there. I had NO idea this happened. Why don't people warn us? SHEESH!

Glad to hear the pupster is teething on healthy veggies. I am not really in the "know" on the raw diet for pets; but my neighbor has always done raw with her dog. From what I understand it is the best possible diet to feed them. She uses mostly chicken wings I think. (I guess the bones are NOT dangerous unless they are cooked??) Regardless I wish you well with the new baby and a lifetime of furry love!!!
    Vicki C/CSL
  • Kris Carr · 1 year ago
Holy crap, I just read that too (that chicken bones raw are fine - great for healthy teeth - but cooked are wicked dangerous). She's loving the raw patties and I am so grateful cause I soooo can't deal with real pieces. I think I'd freak out touching chicken. I love chickens like pets. Ridiculous and wussy.
    XO!
  • lanae · 1 year ago
Oh I'm so excited for your baby. I know lots of people feed their dogs raw veggies but here is my story and I'll try to keep it short. I had a cocker spaniel that some neighbors of my parents gave to me cuz she was too hyper and they were on their way to the pound with her. She lived with me for 11 years. The guy who gave her up was a produce man from a grocery store. He fed her nothing but raw veggies and fruit. That sweet girl would cry her heart out for a strawberry! But, she had the worst tummy trouble that my vet said was from too much raw veggies. So, please check with your sweet pups doc about the raw veggies at least to see what is safe for the long term. Sending puppy dog belly rubs!
  • Kris Carr · 1 year ago
Great advise. The more I give them to her the more I realize that she's destroying them for fun. She ain't eating them. I figure she's probably getting a little chlorophyll and a teeth cleaning? Who knows. I think you're probably right. xo
  • Cathy · 1 year ago
I have a big smile on my face reading your posts about your new puppy. Aren't they wonderful???!!!!!??? I have two and they are like children. Enjoy her!!!!
  • Dianne · 1 year ago
just a note: not only can chocolate be bad for your fur baby, but since you're talking diet, keep Lola away from raw onion and grapes. Both can be very toxic to dogs, but that's a fact that isn't as widely known as the chocolate.

Have fun with her. She is rather lovely!
  • alix · 1 year ago
your pup is ADORABLE!!!! please keeping posting pics so we can watch her grow.

i put my dog on a raw diet about six months ago and she LOVES it. the few extra pounds she was carrying fell right off and her remaining puppyhood bad habits seemed to disappear overnight. i use a food from sojourner farms. http://www.sojos.com/
i love it and they make it so easy. you soak some "oats" and then just add your own raw meat and veggies. i had never bought meat in my entire life and now we always have some raw meat in the fridge- it's pretty funny. i thought it would gross me out but we buy great organic local meat (we mix it up between beef, turkey, elk, bison) and throw several days worth in a pyrex dish so that when it's meal time, i just grab a chunk and throw it in. as for veggies, we always mix that up too. i'll throw several days worth in the blender and then just keep it in the fridge. i had read that dogs have a harder time breaking down veggies and that in the wild (my dog is as far from wild as they come, but...) wolves didn't eat veggies straight up, they would get them from eating the partially digested stomach contents of their "kills". gross, i know. but, it kind of makes sense. so, i'm sticking with the blender. sorry, for the long post. have fun with lola- puppyhood goes so fast!!!

LMAO! Girlfriend they lose teeth just like real babies! Keep giving her the raw baby carrots (you can even freeze the big ones') to chew on.....she'll be just fine!

I went through the same thing with my furbaby. I was playing tuggy with him when all all of a sudden I heard a "crunching" sound and he hacked up a tooth.
It's safe to say that I was hysterycal. I felt like I was the most incompetent puppy parent ever! I had "shattered his teeth in his mouth... It took a great deal of consoling from Bill (my Fiance, who btw, laughed at me too) in order to convince me that this was a normal party of puppyhood. What did I know?! My animal expertise had been to that point limited to guinea pigs, parakeets and fish. In addition,Diego had to have his incisors pulled,as they did not fall out on their own and were crowding his permamnent set of teeth. If this happens to be Lola's case,(I sincerely hope not) have the Vet perform the procedure while they're spaying her. That way, she can avoid the trauma of being anesthetised twice.

P.S. I'm currently rehabbing a dog which I've named Pippi. 4 mo old, 1/2 Pit, 1/2 Boxer who was nearly starved to death by her former owners. (They are now in jail). I named her Pippi after Pippi Longstockings because she's SO skinny (she was literally a walking skeleton, but since i've had her, she's gained a bit of weight) skinny.. but mainly because she has reddish freckles on her face. She is an angel and so full of love. I'll post Pictures of her and Diego (her new boyfriend) soon.

    Disclaimer:

I know I'm gonna get flack for this...

There have been several posts about feeding dogs a vegetarian only diet. I find this profoundly disturbing. Dogs are carnivores and their primordial brains are wet wired to consume organ meats and meat products in addition to bone meal, greens ,and fruits. Although we (myself included) choose to live raw vegan lifestyles, you are doing a serious disservice to your animal companion in the long run by doing so.In addition, the bacteria inhabiting their intestinal tract is adapted to breaking down mainly meat products. I have done the research, and olive oil veggie-scrap nut pate' is NOT cutting it. Raw (some are pre mixed) food products specifically for dogs ond/or Organic meats in conjunction with organic fruits and veggies (Which is what I feed my dog) will give your pet the nutrition it needs. I mentioned that I have been doing animal rescue for many years. One of my closest friends (a Vet) who himself is a vegan, feeds his dog organic chicken fruits and veggies and had nothing good to say about veggie only based diets for dogs and cats.
In short, just like everything in life, it's all about balance. You'll do fine... you already are!!

    kris,

i am fellow "canSer cowgirl" who loves your blog, books, and doc.

first of all, your puppy is freakin' cuter than cute.

i guess that everyone already teased you proper and let you know that it is perfectly normal for pups to lose their baby teeth (i didn't know this initially, either).

my doggie is a one and a half rescued cross-breed who hates most veggies. he spits them out and then looks at me sideways. i have tried, but he will only eat cooked carrots and mushy root veggies. sweet potatoes -- raw or cooked -- however, are a success! have you read ani phyo's raw cookbook? towards the end, she shares a few raw treats that her rescued pooch happily gobbled up.

Hey love.. be careful of the chicken bones raw or not... I worked for a ranch vet for years and we spent a lot of time pulling those bones out of little throats. They can splinter and be mighty dangerous. The chicken however should clear up the skin being dry. Also remember that dogs puppies anyway needs tons of fat... so add there but beware of the poop spots.. and dont add anything to fast or you will be ankle high in not so much fun.. love ya.. and happy times with that beautiful girl.. her eyes are an old souls aren't they.. glorious. Ok great post! I had no idea that dogs lost their teeth!! I would have been freaked out too. Very cute pup by the way:)

After making a green drink in my juicer, I often mix some of the pulp in with my dogs' dry food. They were older when I started this, so they weren't too enthusiastic at first. But they'll eat it if I mix it in well.
  • christiane · 1 year ago
    Hi Kris,
Congrats on the puppy. So cool. She looks adorable.

After researching kibble I gave up on it. I give my pup lots of raw vegetables with alternating raw oils on top (they even have a flx seed oil specifically for pets at Whole Foods) and sometimes a tiny bit of salt. Sometimes fruit, especially stuff she would find in the wild like berries and apples. She loves it all.

But I figure she would eat uncooked meat in nature so I give her raw, cruelty-free meat and also raw bone with the marrow in it -- which she chews on for hours. Seems to work for her teeth; they grow nicely, are sharp and super white.

Very rarely kibble except for "Halo"; it has almost no junk. When I make juice I give her the foam which she loves. (Unless grapefruit is in it; she hates citrus!). When she was smaller I moistened her food with a bit of milk...

So far her coat is supershiny, teeth are strong. Body built good so I figure this might be the right path.

what a cutie! my dog henry LOVES carrots, especially if they are frozen. i can get huge bags or organic carrots at costco. cheap. he also likes canned pumpkin (so does herman the cat). the pumpkin is good for their digestive system. just don't be surprised to find carrot chunks in the poo!

That dog is adorable! So cute that you didn't know about dog baby teeth.

I feed my dog both raw and cooked kibble. We ran out of dog food two days ago, so until the first of the month, he's been getting just raw pate and sweet potatoes and veggie scraps. He LOVES his raw food! :D

Holy Cow your puppy is so adorable. I have a catahola/lab mix(Blaze) and a boxer/pitbull mix(Lucy) and your puppy looks like my two dogs baby! Rescuing dogs is the best medicine ever. My catahoula came from and kill shelter and my pit mix was abandoned in my neighborhood. I've never posted before, but I have your book and am totally inspired by you. I have to tell you that you caused a very significant change in my cancer attitude. My husband had advanced rectal cancer in 2008 and my was just diagnosed with a rare breast cancer. TOOO much GOD DAMN cancer! I was angry at the world and the people in my life with it. I had scene your documentary awhile ago. But, watching you on Oprah was a mind altering experience. I understand my mother's profound positive attitude toward the disease threatening her life. I get it finally that we can choose to LIVE NOT DIE!
I get it. You helped me grasp the mind body connection. I am now inspired to help save my mother's life who I love so very much. Thank you Kris I needed that!
