i started feeding my dogs raw using Ani Phyo's recipe that she used to feed her dog Kanga. Nuts, evoo, veggie scraps, etc and she makes a pate. The recipe is in her book.
I use what i've got on hand but it usually makes enough to get them about 25-50% raw depending on the yield from whatever i had and since i have two poochies to feed it to. I mix that with Avoderm vegetarian kibble and my kids are thriving, their coats are amazing, their poops are smaller (bonus!!) and they are just super wonderful all around!
oh, as for how, slow and steady. take about a week or so to slowly increase more and more to prevent any tummy upsets or scoots. ;)
miss you mucho, tons of love & hugs to you three!!
I miss you guys mucho. Been traveling so much. Kimball's card is on my vision board, a constant reminder of new friends. I need to email you! Hope all is well, great info on the enzymes and pro's. Who knew these things existed! xo
I just started using Ani Phyo's raw dog food recipe, which is basically a veggie/nut pate with some garlic and salt. I am working on different ones, Malcolm will eat some. not others. he likes almond pulp and almond milk, but not brazil nut milk or pulp. I added brewers yeast too.
Good Luck with Lucky Lola!

And you should see how I hovered over him at the dog park, like a human cage! But it's your baby! Now I laugh when I see the newbies at the park who remind me of me and try and reassure them.
Every dog is different but if she is very young, keep an eye on her after eating carrots and kale - I found it made my puppy have to go to the bathroom "RIGHT NOW OR ESLE!" xoxo
When I first wanted to do raw for my kitties you had to make your own. I even had to import bone meal from Canada! Now it is quite an industry. My cats like the raw foods made by Innova; they also do dog food. You can also find them in the freezer at your boutique pet stores. (I think I did see some pup-sicles at the regular grocery store recently.) For cats there is also an "instant" food that is quite good. Please remember dogs are omnivores and need their meat protein. It is essential for their eyes and bone development, so don't even play around with a vegan life style for the pooch.

good luck - and lots of love

I cannot feel my dogs even one baby carrot or it is pukesville. Sensitive tummies over here. They are healthy boys but one of them has some dry skin and dandruff! Anyone have a remedy that doesn't involve changing their food?

Crazy Sexy Oprah & Martha Stewarts' Holistic minded healing vet, Dr. Marty Goldstein has a great site for a list of how to feed our beloved furries that i thought y'all might like to look at. I used it to help my Boo-Man-Choo who has chronic Addison's, a life threatening dis-ease..anyway, you can also go to Ms. O's site, or his main page by looking up his name, but I locating the food page separately:

It starts out w/the "best" raw and goes down the list from there...hope its a blessing...xo, Bren
But baby cats lose their teeth too...I kept my kittens fangs on the vanity until a friend accidentally blew them down the sink with his breath being too close to the mirror...supposing that is why they call it a vanity...he thoughtfully replaced them years later with a tiger wisker he got from helping out at the zoo.
Good luck new momma!
I'm SO glad you adopted Lola and are having a blast! Dogs are just the best!
my dog is on a really special diet. we have to get her food at the vet's office every month and she only eats at certain times of the day- 8, 12, 4, and 8. it has to be those times or my stepdad loses it haha
Love,

Glad to hear the pupster is teething on healthy veggies. I am not really in the "know" on the raw diet for pets; but my neighbor has always done raw with her dog. From what I understand it is the best possible diet to feed them. She uses mostly chicken wings I think. (I guess the bones are NOT dangerous unless they are cooked??) Regardless I wish you well with the new baby and a lifetime of furry love!!!

XO!
Have fun with her. She is rather lovely!
i put my dog on a raw diet about six months ago and she LOVES it. the few extra pounds she was carrying fell right off and her remaining puppyhood bad habits seemed to disappear overnight. i use a food from sojourner farms. http://www.sojos.com/
i love it and they make it so easy. you soak some "oats" and then just add your own raw meat and veggies. i had never bought meat in my entire life and now we always have some raw meat in the fridge- it's pretty funny. i thought it would gross me out but we buy great organic local meat (we mix it up between beef, turkey, elk, bison) and throw several days worth in a pyrex dish so that when it's meal time, i just grab a chunk and throw it in. as for veggies, we always mix that up too. i'll throw several days worth in the blender and then just keep it in the fridge. i had read that dogs have a harder time breaking down veggies and that in the wild (my dog is as far from wild as they come, but...) wolves didn't eat veggies straight up, they would get them from eating the partially digested stomach contents of their "kills". gross, i know. but, it kind of makes sense. so, i'm sticking with the blender. sorry, for the long post. have fun with lola- puppyhood goes so fast!!!
It's safe to say that I was hysterycal. I felt like I was the most incompetent puppy parent ever! I had "shattered his teeth in his mouth... It took a great deal of consoling from Bill (my Fiance, who btw, laughed at me too) in order to convince me that this was a normal party of puppyhood. What did I know?! My animal expertise had been to that point limited to guinea pigs, parakeets and fish. In addition,Diego had to have his incisors pulled,as they did not fall out on their own and were crowding his permamnent set of teeth. If this happens to be Lola's case,(I sincerely hope not) have the Vet perform the procedure while they're spaying her. That way, she can avoid the trauma of being anesthetised twice.

P.S. I'm currently rehabbing a dog which I've named Pippi. 4 mo old, 1/2 Pit, 1/2 Boxer who was nearly starved to death by her former owners. (They are now in jail). I named her Pippi after Pippi Longstockings because she's SO skinny (she was literally a walking skeleton, but since i've had her, she's gained a bit of weight) skinny.. but mainly because she has reddish freckles on her face. She is an angel and so full of love. I'll post Pictures of her and Diego (her new boyfriend) soon.
I know I'm gonna get flack for this...
There have been several posts about feeding dogs a vegetarian only diet. I find this profoundly disturbing. Dogs are carnivores and their primordial brains are wet wired to consume organ meats and meat products in addition to bone meal, greens ,and fruits. Although we (myself included) choose to live raw vegan lifestyles, you are doing a serious disservice to your animal companion in the long run by doing so.In addition, the bacteria inhabiting their intestinal tract is adapted to breaking down mainly meat products. I have done the research, and olive oil veggie-scrap nut pate' is NOT cutting it. Raw (some are pre mixed) food products specifically for dogs ond/or Organic meats in conjunction with organic fruits and veggies (Which is what I feed my dog) will give your pet the nutrition it needs. I mentioned that I have been doing animal rescue for many years. One of my closest friends (a Vet) who himself is a vegan, feeds his dog organic chicken fruits and veggies and had nothing good to say about veggie only based diets for dogs and cats.
In short, just like everything in life, it's all about balance. You'll do fine... you already are!!

i am fellow "canSer cowgirl" who loves your blog, books, and doc.
first of all, your puppy is freakin' cuter than cute.
i guess that everyone already teased you proper and let you know that it is perfectly normal for pups to lose their baby teeth (i didn't know this initially, either).
my doggie is a one and a half rescued cross-breed who hates most veggies. he spits them out and then looks at me sideways. i have tried, but he will only eat cooked carrots and mushy root veggies. sweet potatoes -- raw or cooked -- however, are a success! have you read ani phyo's raw cookbook? towards the end, she shares a few raw treats that her rescued pooch happily gobbled up.

Congrats on the puppy. So cool. She looks adorable.
After researching kibble I gave up on it. I give my pup lots of raw vegetables with alternating raw oils on top (they even have a flx seed oil specifically for pets at Whole Foods) and sometimes a tiny bit of salt. Sometimes fruit, especially stuff she would find in the wild like berries and apples. She loves it all.
But I figure she would eat uncooked meat in nature so I give her raw, cruelty-free meat and also raw bone with the marrow in it -- which she chews on for hours. Seems to work for her teeth; they grow nicely, are sharp and super white.
Very rarely kibble except for "Halo"; it has almost no junk. When I make juice I give her the foam which she loves. (Unless grapefruit is in it; she hates citrus!). When she was smaller I moistened her food with a bit of milk...
So far her coat is supershiny, teeth are strong. Body built good so I figure this might be the right path.

I get it. You helped me grasp the mind body connection. I am now inspired to help save my mother's life who I love so very much. Thank you Kris I needed that!
